Arctic Fox vision simulator

Arctic Fox vision simulator can help you to approach the foxes. It’s important to remember that vision is a small part of the presence detection system of the fox, smell and hearing are very good and the fox will try to see you only if an other sense raise doubts of your presence to him.

This Artic fox vision simulator is an adaptation of the Dog vision algorithm with the data collected in this article : Malkemper EP, Peichl L. Retinal photoreceptor and ganglion cell types and topographies in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus). J Comp Neurol. 2018;526:2078–2098. https://doi.org/10.1002/cne.24493.
M/L cones and S cones have been implemented in accordance to the basic mammalian pattern (reviews: Jacobs, 1993; Ahnelt & Kolb, 2000; Peichl, 2005; Hunt & Peichl, 2014). The dichromatic color have been configured with a peak sensitivity (λmax) of the M/L opsin is at 555 nm, of the S opsin at 430–435 nm. It’s good to note that Arctic fox S cone sensitivity peaks at violet to blue wavelengths, so it’s possible that foxes can see ultraviolet (UV, <400 nm). Douglas and Jeffery (2014), something you can't see in this tool.

You can use this tool to anticipate the camouflage you will need during our Fox Watching tour. You will certainly deduce that sping season and autumn season are approximately the same color context for an Arctic Fox.
